Anya looked down, watching with half lidded eyes as an orange rolled away from the ladder. She bent down picking up the piece of fruit handing it back to Jeremiah who was perched on top of the ladder.

“Thank you,” he said before turning his back to resume picking the fruit.

“You’re welcome,” she said with the tiniest bit of emotion in her voice. She continued to stare up at him, shielding her eyes from the hot sun with her hand.

This man was my first real memory in ten years. A memory created not by an endless log or photographs, but my own thoughts.

She felt her lips curl up in an unfamiliar way.

A smile.
